FROM THE OBSERVATORY

Light, bent.
Letters, set free.

This black hole is an artistic experiment. Every point of light is a character, selected for its brightness and drawn onto a moving grid.

The dark center
A shadow marks the place where light disappears from view.
The accretion disk
Swirling bands of hot material form the luminous disk around the center.
The photon ring
A fine halo evokes light bent around the black hole by gravity.

Drag an asteroid, star, or probe out of the tray, then release to throw it. Its speed and direction affect its path. Near the core, differential gravity pulls the fragments into strands. Each captured object adds mass and enlarges the illustrated horizon. Click a tray object to launch it without dragging.

At the display's critical-mass threshold, the accretion disk erupts in a bright outburst and throws gas outward. The black hole stays intact; a broad gas ring remains in orbit. Supernovae are explosions of stars, not black holes. This threshold and the mass readout are visual shorthand, not real astrophysical limits.
